Two line stops, a waggler attachment and two more stops; a converter pushed onto the foam pellet waggler clips into the attachment, so there is no shot on the line. A small loop, a ready rig loop to loop, two feet deep to start, and the disgorger for a deep hook.

Bait the hook first with two red maggots, top and tailed, then twist the lid open, push the maggots to the bottom and fill it up without packing it, about 25 in a small feeder. Twist it shut, keep a finger over the holes, dunk it in the edge and cast. Recast every three to six minutes, and set a Carp Maggot Feeder's window fast for carp and F1s or slow for rivers and deep water.

A small loop in the end of the line, with the line passed back through it, makes a lasso: drop it over the spool, pull it tight on the drum and trim the end. Close the bail, tighten the clutch, sit the new spool in a bucket of water with the label up, wind it on tight through finger and thumb, check for twist after twenty turns and fill to just under the lip.

The autumn and winter edge for carp and F1s: an inline lead on an X-Safe elastic (or its standard insert and a Speed Bead where elastic is not allowed), a 15 inch bayonet rig with a wafter, and a tight Speedmesh bag of hard 2 and 4 mm pellets pulled onto the hooklength with the needle so just the wafter shows. It melts to a little pile of feed by the hookbait; search the swim, and keep casting where the tip shows liners.

Sonubaits Supercrush Expander Dark is pure crushed expander that stays dark when wet, for clear winter water. Two pints of groundbait to one of water, all in at once and stirred to a soup, lid on for 15 to 30 minutes until it sets like a cake, then through a 4 mm riddle (3 mm in the depths of winter). Squeeze it lightly to cloud or hard to reach the bottom, and for cupping mix it one to one with the water in first and cup a small nugget in after every fish.

How to fish bread punch on the pole

The classic cold-water way to catch roach and skimmers. Keep the bread in its bag and roll each slice flat, match the punch to the fish (4 mm on a size 20 for small roach up to 8 or 10 mm on a 16 for skimmers), punch and twist, hook it through the slot and sit the bread punch on the bend with the point showing. Feed one walnut-sized ball of damp punch crumb, bunch the Stotz about six inches from the hook, set it just off the bottom and expect a bite within minutes.

A deadly cold-water method for carp and F1s: a 15 g Preston ICS in-line match cube with an in-line quick change bead and a 15 inch Rapid Stop hair rig trimmed to suit. Push the needle into the Rapid Stop, hold the hook back down the needle and push three fluffy discs of fresh bread over the stop onto the hair. It floats straight up off the bottom, there is no feed, and line bites tell you the fish are there.

An easy switch from bomb and bread when you want your hookbait on the bottom: the same 15 g Preston ICS in-line match cube, quick change bead and Rapid Stop hair rig, now a size 14. Push two firm grains of sweetcorn over the Rapid Stop onto the hair with the needle. Corn sinks, so it settles on the bottom anywhere up to a hooklength from the cube. Search the swim and strike the sharp jags.

A winter method for skimmers on commercials: a Preston ICS in-line cage feeder with a quick change bead and a 6 inch size 16 Guru Super LWGS hooklength, with two dead red maggots or a 4 mm expander on the hook. Mix your groundbait damp, fill one end of the cage, drop a pinch of casters in the middle, plug the other end and cast to the clip so every feeder lands in the same spot.

A winter method for carp and F1s with the Guru pellet cone: micros soaked overnight in the fridge with the water just covering them, packed really hard into the cone. Push the needle through from the wide end to the thin end and pull the hooklength back through, so the hook is hidden with just a grain of corn showing. It stays together on the way down, then breaks up on the bottom.
